Arrival and Accommodation
Arrival in Madaba:
As a German citizen, you will need a passport that is valid for at least six more months for entry into Jordan. Visitors from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland require an entry visa for Jordan. Tourists can obtain an entry visa (40 JOD) upon arrival at any entry point, except at the King Hussein Bridge at the border with Israel. The standard tourist visa is valid for two months and can be extended. If you purchase a Jordan Pass online before your trip, the visa fee will be waived upon entry. Simply present your Jordan Pass (printed version) at the passport control in Jordan to receive your entry stamp.
Please check the entry regulations from your respective countries.
The conference venue is the Madaba campus of the German Jordanian University (GJU), located 8 km outside of Madaba (on the main road to Amman). Most events will take place in Building G.
We recommend booking accommodation in Madaba:
Mariam Hotel, Grand Hotel Madaba, Rumman Hotel, Aitch Boutique Hotel (all hotels are located next to each other) or the Mosaic City Hotel (a 10-minute walk from the other hotels, a little further toward the city center).
Madaba is about a 25-minute drive from Queen Alia International Airport in Amman. A taxi ride from the airport costs 22.5 Jordanian Dinar. Tell the taxi driver at the airport taxi stand that you want to go to the Mariam Hotel in Madaba (even if you are staying at the Grand Hotel Madaba, for example). Every taxi driver knows this hotel.
The Grand Hotel Madaba can arrange airport pickups if you request it in advance.
Please do not expect luxury accommodations. However, our German guest professors always stay here when they teach at the GJU!
For those staying in Madaba, there is a transport service from the above-mentioned hotels to the GJU and back. However, the GJU is also easily accessible by local buses (35 Piaster) or by taxi (2-3 JD) or Uber (around 2.50 JD).
Due to its central location, Madaba is also a great starting point for tourist explorations. I am happy to provide more information or assist in organizing day trips with reliable private drivers. Madaba itself is famous for its 6th-century Byzantine mosaics, which can be admired in churches and museums.
Of course, you can also choose other hotels in Madaba, Amman, or even by the Dead Sea, which is just a 40-minute drive from Madaba. In this case, you will be responsible for your own transportation.
You can enjoy traditional Arabic dishes at the Ayar Restaurant across from the Rumman Hotel or at Carob House (a few minutes’ walk toward the city center). Madaba’s most famous restaurant is Hared Jdoudna Restaurant, which is known for its ambiance in Ottoman style.
